Casio Pro Trek Smart: Brawn and Brains

Casio Pro Trek Smart: Brawn and Brains

News
Casio is known to be able to build watches that can withstand quite a beating. With the introduction of the new Pro Trek Smart, the brawn has now also gotten a brain and an even more impressive one as was introduced last year. Next to updated looks does the new Pro Trek Smart now come with a low-power GPS. Casio achieves the low-power aspect by only obtaining the location from the satellites and not get any map data. The maps you can download directly onto the watch before you go, at home or in your hotel. This makes a lot of sense because most people know to which area they are going and by foot, bike or even car you won't go that far in rough terrain. A huge benefit…

100 Year Old Wrist Watch, Do You Dare?

100 Year Old Wrist Watch, Do You Dare?

Affordable at Auction
Some watches are just cool because they look cool. They are tarnished, battered, and in this case even brandless, yet despite all of this (or perhaps because) so utterly cool! Fellows in the United Kingdom is auctioning such a watch as lot 345. A silver wrist watch from 1917, with no indication of the brand. In fact, the only thing that Fellows can tell us regarding the make of this watch is that it is stamped with silver case import hallmark of London 1917. The only thing that this tells us is that the case of the watch is not of British origin. This watch is a bit of a mystery, and it will probably always stay that way. It does give the future owner something to look into and…

Pomo Waffle: A Smart Watch For Your Kids

Pomo Waffle: A Smart Watch For Your Kids

News
Watches catered to kids is nothing new. Flik Flak has been around for decades, Lego is making watches, so it is not surprising that some manufacturers now also create smart watches catered to kids. A new entry in this market is Pomo with the Waffle. The name sounds like a clown you can rent to make waffle's at a kids birthday party, but the watch is quite serious. With build in GPS, it can aid both parents as well as the kids themselves. Parents can for example set a safe zone in which the kids are allowed to play around the house, and get a notification when the kid is leaving this area. Kids can touch the screen and have the watch tell them the route home. Clever features that…

2016….what a year!

2016….what a year!

News
The end of the year is always a natural moment to look back and take in what the years have brought. 2016 was in many ways a very dynamic year! It was a year in which the smart watch took a beating, yet at the same time also showed that it was here to stay. It matured, and while Fitbit took over Pebble, we saw microbrands introducing smart watches of their own, filling voids and niches. For 2017 we will probably see more of this, and as the technology becomes more accessible for smaller companies, I suspect that the days of the quartz movement are doomed. 2016 was also the year in which microbrands, in general, showed that they carry a punch! The overall quality is now at a very…

Introducing the MAEN Classic Moonphase Watch

Introducing the MAEN Classic Moonphase Watch

News
Moon phases play an important role in the natural world, so it’s quite logical that they are also important when it comes to the watch market. A friend of mine recently told me: “My next watch will definitely be a moon phase watch” and then, it was exactly at the same moment that the guys from MAEN Watches contacted me. The brand was launched by two Dutch guys living in Stockholm and the brand name “MAEN” is taken from an old Dutch word meaning Moon and is inspired by the Dutch ship, Halve Maen (Half Moon), that discovered what is known today as New York City back in September 1609. So in tribute to this ship, the founders of the brand decided to debut their collection with a classic moon…

MTM Status: Toughen Up Your Apple Watch

MTM Status: Toughen Up Your Apple Watch

News
There might be a way for Apple to increase the sales of their Apple Watch, and that is by introducing a tougher version of it. We recently already talked about the Rhino band, but LA-based brand MTM takes it even a step further with their Status. Does the name sound familiar? Probably because MTM also makes tactical military watches.   The approach they take is entirely different. They offer an aluminum or titanium cover to go over you Apple Watch 2. The construction gives your watch the look of a Terminator. Especially since the case of the MTM comes with two places in which you can add a compass, analog clock or digital clock/date. This can be especially handy when you are using your Apple watch for other things. The…

Watchisthis?! Christmas Issue Out Now!

Watchisthis?! Christmas Issue Out Now!

Magazine
It is always a pleasure to introduce a new edition of Watchisthis?! Magazine, especially just for the holidays. Since the magazine is free to read it feels as our gift to you. In it, you find an exclusive interview with Yvan Arpa, who teamed up with Samsung to design the new Samsung Gear S3. Vincent Carrara of Todd & Marlon tells us all about the brand's interpretation of luxury, and we also spoke with Andre Bernheim of Mondaine, which recently bought Luminox watches, about railroad watches. Love for watches can take many forms: Liam Jacobi likes to put them on canvas. We asked him what moves him to do so, and where he gets is inspiration from. An inspired person is also Damien Koch of Hof watches, who has a…

Affordable at Auction: Rarities from Swatch

Affordable at Auction: Rarities from Swatch

News
Something special for Swatch collectors just before the holidays. Squiggly.com auctions 190 Swatch limited edition and early prototype in an online auction. The lots contain some very rare items. Based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Squiggly is a specialist dealer of vintage Swatch watches. They sell watches with official warranty, instructions, and original packaging. Although Swatch is in general quite an affordable watch, you can find at this auction some pieces going for more than what you are probably used to, which is the proof that a Swatch is a collectible item. At this auction, you can also buy some rare posters. In the 80’s Swatch was extremely active to get the name of the brand known everywhere. The marketing strategies were different on every continent. Something that was completely abandoned…

Balticus Star Dust: Star Struck

Balticus Star Dust: Star Struck

News
Creativity runs strong with most affordable micro brands, and Balticus is no exception. With the Star Dust they have created a sports watch with a strong profile, yet that is not even the main attraction of the watch. Credit for that goes to the extraordinary dial. While I reported earlier on the launch of this watch, we have now one at hand to go deeper into the details that set the Star Dust apart from its peers. That dial is crafted from a special kind of granite that not only has a deep blue color, but also little specks in it that reflect light. It kind of make you feel as if you are standing in the Enterprise and stare into the depths of space. It is very captivating, and…

Lundis Bleus: The Elegance of Excellence

Lundis Bleus: The Elegance of Excellence

News
Many new micro brands pop up every year, and we cover quite a few here at Watchisthis?! Although many of them are quite refined, few reach the level of Lundis Bleus, especially not with their very first watch. Perhaps also not a fair comparison, because Johan Storni and Bastien Vuilliomenet are veterans of the Swiss watch industry, with experience working with brands that charge for a strap what Lundis Bleus wants for an entire watch. They poured all that experience into Lundis Bleus, but fortunate for us they also gave it a far more accessible price tag. The first thing that strikes you when you see the watch is that everything is custom made. Lundis Bleus is very straight forward in where their source their parts from, and which of…
