Watch I Love : Pangaea Day Date by Meistersinger

Watch I Love : Pangaea Day Date by Meistersinger

Opinion
In the Westphalian city of Münster, Germany, there is a small watch manufacturer - MeisterSinger. They are best known for their single-hand watches which are based on the idea of the very old watches with only one hand and antique solar watches. From the MeisterSinger Collection, I really like the Pangaea Day/Date. These watches have not only the charm of the single hand pieces but they are also really practical thanks to the day and date display. My favourite one from the Pangaea Collection is the reference PDD908 with a sunburst blue dial. I love the whole dial of this one with its white printed indexes and Arabic numerals. It really gives a nice contrast and a perfect visibility of all the informations. Interesting thing about this piece is that the date ring turns clockwise and the day…

Defakto Goes For Purity With New Dialog

Defakto Goes For Purity With New Dialog

News
Defakto has always been a brand that believed that less was more. It challenged itself on how to be creative by using only as fewer lines as possible, not only when it came to their case designs, but also their dials. Now they have added another dimension to this with their new watch, named Dialog. With this watch, Defakto also applies the less is more philosophy on the price of their watch. Now, Defakto has always offered value for money watches, and of all their watches that I reviewed, I never felt that they were even the slightest inflated. With a price tag of 210,08 euros (without VAT) the Dialog is the least expensive of all Defakto models, yet it still offers all the characteristics. The Dialog is available with…

Vapaus: A Lesson In Minimalism

Vapaus: A Lesson In Minimalism

News
Kickstarter and Indiegogo are full of them, department stores are full of them, and, what a surprise, Alibaba.com is full of them. Minimalist watches that are being presented to us in the most glorious marketing-terms, to convince us that less is more, often tossing some Scandinavian countries, as well as some Scandinavian looking people, in for good measure. Unfortunately these watches are often created by a designer with a minimum of talent, who wanted to invest a minimum amount of his time, because even he knows that the watch will be made at a minimum quality level, in a factory that most likely offers its workers as minimum of a wage as possible, all to maximize profits. Fortunately there are brands like Vapaus on Kickstarter, who try to set the…

Stowa Flies High With The Flieger Professional DIN

Stowa Flies High With The Flieger Professional DIN

News
Yes, Stowa has their new Flieger watch DIN-certified. Great news, but actually not even the best news! The best news is without a doubt the watch itself, which is a fresh look on that classic Flieger uhr. [caption id="attachment_1033" align="aligncenter" width="632"] Stowa's DIN certificate[/caption] That fresh look is not too surprising, because once again Stowa collaborated with Hartmut Esslinger, the founder of Frog design, to come up with something new. The Flieger Professional DIN shows an updated design from the original Flieger-uhren (of which Stowa was by the way one of the original manufacturers during WWII) with a very legible dial. The traditional solid triangle has been replaced with an arrow shape, indicating twelve o'clock. Although the bezel is still clearly readable, it has large indentations so it can be…

Mühle-Glashütte Presents The New ProMare Chronograph

Mühle-Glashütte Presents The New ProMare Chronograph

News
Yes, we admit it, the new ProMare Chronograph by Mühle-Glashütte is pushing the limits of Watchisthis?! highest price barrier, but we decided to include it as an exception to our rule. Why? Because of what it has to offer, and it might be worth for some watch connoisseurs to save up to get this watch. The ProMare is a nice all rounder. With a diameter of 44mm it's large, but the beautiful carbon coated black dial makes it wear slightly smaller. Depending on the light does this dial have a greyish hue to it. The design is very clean, yet it has small details that make it very interesting to look at. Like the applied indices that not only reflect the light quite well, but are also topped off with…

Introducing The Porthole Watch

News
How to get a place in an industry that is already quite busy? Rogier van de Ree is a watch enthusiast who has a furious love for design. His passion drove him to create in 2015 his own watch brand : Pheidippides Watches. The name of the brand comes from a Greek messenger who ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. Victory, that’s also what we hope Pheidippides Watches achieves, as they make their grand entry into the world of watches by launching the Porthole timepiece. The brand based in the Netherlands started in 2015 with creativity as a lead motiv. For this new brand, Rogier van de Ree has designed three timepieces: The Inkpot, The Porthole and The Hourglass. Defakto nominee for German Design Award!

Defakto nominee for German Design Award!

News
Defakto has been nominated for the prestigious German Design Award 2016. This can not come as a complete surprise because with their "less-is-more"-design philosophy this was bound to happen. The nominee is the Akkord Modular Bronze, a watch that combines a black pvd coated bezel, with a bronze center part of the case. This contrast of colors is amazing by itself, and it makes you wonder why other manufacturers have not thought flocked to take over the idea. The dial of the Akkord Modular Bronze is elementary, my dear Watson. However as straight forward as it seems, it's the hands that makes all the difference. They offer a playful element, that makes all the difference! We, at Watchisthis?!, congratulate Defakto on being nominated and will keep our fingers crossed so…
